Are we talking about your formica right now? (sorry for slipping into this conversation :))

Thanks. It seems to me that camponotus can be pretty resistant to light. I have not really tried vibrations, but they are much less jumpy than formica, that is for sure(i am sure that you have noticed this :))

That's why I adore them lol, however Camponotus do still dislike vibrations which is why I was worried. Also,  The queen's antenna didn't move under light like they normally would which is also concerning...

I just caught a queen

:o I am the luckiest man alive right now lol :yahoo:

I'll take a pic later, I covered a test tube with something to block the light and within seconds she moved...This. Queen. Is. Amazing.

Black, looks to have a stinger? is smaller than my Formica queen (like 3 fourths the size) and was in the same log as a amber colored queen. I think it's Lasius but I'm not sure...

I also think she started to lay eggs because I was able to see her silhouette and she was bent over, with a tiny bit of her gaster above the substrate in her tube

Put an ID request with clear photos. My hunch would be a Lasius parasite.

That is also what I was thinking. Also, you indeed are the luckiest man alive :D. So, ant collecting season had begun down there? Our lasius swarm in September.

It's not a parasite because 1.) it looks fully claustral (large midsection and gaster, smaller head compared to gaster, etc.) and I saw her silhouette in an egg laying position so I'm timid to check (sorry about no photos, I didn't think she would do any of this so fast) and I didn't catch her via nuptial flight, I was walking with my dad and he found the log and the rest is history so sorry about the misinterpretations and confusion. Should I give her an option to feed though?

The Lasius queen has a name now; her name is Queen Tyche!
