Nah, SleepyAsianAnter taught me how to make good nests of my own now.

I also figured out de way, i know de way now. de way is de way and de way is way. I made a very good nest is what i'm saying that could hold hundreds of medium sized ants, has a good hydration system and is heat friendly.

Expensive formicariums are my biggest problem with ant keeping. I can small nests but eventually I have to buy THA stuff. And then I say goodbye to my $.

How big are these compared to Solenopsis molesta?

The minors are slightly larger than S. molesta. The majors are like Tetramorium workers, but with huge heads.

i feel the same. i can just imagine my $ flying away right now when my formica colony gets really big. that is why i hope to get my own formicariums running. it is hard with the extreme cold though. :(

Trust me, Formica can definitely get expensive, but not as much as you'd think. I've only had to spend about $300 total on nests for my largest Formica colony.

Just get a big container and put multiple test tubes in for them to nest in.

I mean I could but I find 100000 test tubes in a giant container kind of trashy looking. It works but I don't like how it looks.

I get that. A big terrarium could be your other option.

I'm kind of thankful my Nylanderia have plateaued in growth for a while. They do have like 400 eggs though.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

that is what i am doing for my camponotus novaeboracensis. for big ants terrariums are the way to go because they can't fit through the lid of the terrarium.

I'd need a big terrarium. I do want to create a terrarium for my Hypos though. What's the safest way to hydrate terrariums without flooding the ants?

Put a flat rock the ants can nest under like a roof. Sprinkle water over the rock like rainfall. You will always have dry areas under the rock and wetter areas around it to create a gradient. You also should make a drainage layer with charcoal and gravel at the bottom.

Update 12/7/2020

I decided a while back that I would hibernate this colony after all. They were slowing down, and I was ready for a break myself, so I took them off heat and haven't been feeding them protein. I'll drive them to my parents' basement today, which is where I am keeping all my ants for diapause. A third of the colony is in their Fallen Pheidole Phortress, one third in the old mini-hearth (with the queen), and the rest are lounging in the outworld chugging water.

On a whim, I sent some photos of them to Mack at THA, and he says he wants to put some in his holiday newsletter! I'm beyond pumped!

Ok, that's awesome.  I shall see your phantastic pheidole on THA's website then.  Lol.  I love the look of the majors... So awesome.  I need to get my hands on some of these ants.  Maybe someday...
