Here's some pictures of a Pogonomyrmex hoelldobleri. Not a super uncommon species, but it seems to fly under the radar of most. Around the same size of P. magnacanthus, but with more size variation within workers - which leads to workers sometimes ranging smaller than P. magnacanthus.

We just got snow off the ground in our locale last week and it’s too cold or muddy to be kneeling on the ground with my camera, macro lens, and lights so I’m sticking to one of my captive C. pennsylvanicus colonies.

Pheidole clementensis colony. Not the nice color variants from San Clemente Island, but it's still a nice color variant.

Wow mate. Beautiful queen. I been looking off catching a nuptial flight. What kind of biome did you find her in.

Since pictures of living Pheidole psammophila don't seem to exist anywhere, here's some I took during distribution surveying I did. P. psammophila is the second largest Pheidole in California, the runner up to P. barbata. Pardon the unfocused areas, my focal distance is miniscule with the setup I have.

I noticed this today near my beehive while filling the bird feeders in my yard. One colony’s loss is another colony’s bounty…

Not as aesthetically pleasing as all these live environmental shots, but I figured I'd share some of my improving microscope photography

I found this Aphaenogaster colony in the bark on a stump and they had a beautiful queen. I don't have a good camera but I wanted to take a picture of her because she had amazing colors.

My Pogonomyrmex rugosus colony is nearing eight months of age and recently started to produce reproductives and this brachypterous gyne.

Can this gyne mate?

Do they have females that stay in the nest and receive suitors, like army ants do?

She may be viable to reporoduced since her gaster is enlarged similar to that of the dealate gyne in the colony, however I don't have males to try it out. They don't have males go into the colony to mate with intercastes such as this to my knowledge. I would assume she would get killed if she was to be mated and not separed from the colony because it would create competition between the main gyne and the brachypterous gyne.

Nice shots! I’m curious, are you using a focusing rail or focus stacking?
