Mine have the larvae in the shape of what would be ~1.5 alate cocoons; they are very conservative lol

Yea! They are a pain to feed though. Their majors are super aggressive.

I WILL find Pheidole next year. Here’s the plan: in June hook up a battery powered black light in the woods and sit out there with my buddies and a case of cold ones.

Sounds like a good plan, no obvious flaws I could see
Yeah, man. What could go wrong?
It's like a good Friday night, and you get to catch queens!

I would LOVE to do this.

Maybe next year with some fellow Californians.

Enjoy ANTdrew

I feel like there should be a national "chill with your mates and catch queen ants" day

Or we could start a petition to exempt a few species. A few I would do are: Prenolepis imparis, Camponotus americanus, Camponotus castaneus, Camponotus pennslyvanicus, Camponotus chromaiodes,
Camponotus fragilis, Pogonomyrmex badius, Lasius americanus, Lasius brevicornis, Lasius neoniger, Formica pacifica, Formica pallidefullva, Formica neogagates, Formica subsericea, Formica obscuripes, Formica neorufibarbis, Pseudomyrmex gracilis, Acromyrmex versicolor, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Odontomachus bruennus, Colobopsis impressa, Colobopsis obliqua Colobopsis mississippiensis.

Coming up on 4 years. They'll be 4 years in June. They are a huge colony. Pushing 5,000 workers. They killed most of their alates, but kept about 12 females and chewed their wings off. Now they forage like normal workers.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

From the very long list of plant pests.
So far only Pogonomyrmex occidentalis has been exempted.
