[Ender Ants]

1. Location: Mojave Desert, Nevada side

2. Date: March 20, 2018
3. Habitat: Desert
4. Length: About 2 - 4mm
5. Color: Dark Orange, with yellow abdomen
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Has a black circle like symbol on their abdomen. Not all are identically on the same part of their abdomen
7. Distinguishing behavior: Slow moving
8. Nest description: Small cone like nests that are similar to Dorymyrmex nests.

 

Haven't spotted any alates, but were moving out small gravel from their nest. Either they are getting ready for a nuptial flight or they just got out of hibernation. The closest species that I could find that could be these ones were Temnothorax curvispinosus.

I thought that the video may be easier to see/identify the workers, as the pictures are not as good quality.

How do you add pictures other than links? I have tried attaching files, but I get an error stating that I do not have the permission to add this type of file. It is a simple click, how come you will not go to a separate link? I can understand if it is a trust issue, such as leading to a virus of some sort.

Photos are actually much higher quality than videos (and still images captured from video). At 1080, this is only about as detailed as a 2 megapixel picture; the extra resolution is often needed to pick up on important details like hair coverage and magnifying in general is not a headache. I can at least tell that they're Pheidole from what you've provided. It helps when the ants aren't moving.
