Hello everyone, so my son and I undertook a ginormous project today and moved our m. mexicanus colony from their THA Pioneer XL to a custom commissioned Pioneer XXXL! The XXXL is my nomenclature because it’s more than twice the size of the XL with 4 levels instead of 3 (and more than twice as heavy!). Mack at THA really knocked this custom job out of the park and I couldn’t be happier. I actually commissioned this custom formicarium for my m. navajos but I think that colony is way too big to move now. The colony also produced a lot of alates with both drones and queens so I just didn’t want to risk disrupting them.

Anyway, I wanted to take my time to properly document the move with good, detailed pictures but we were under the gun to complete the move before we take my son back to school. And I knew this was more than just a one man job. Here’s a picture of the XXXL before the move:

Here’s the mexicanus colony right before the move in their Pioneer XL formicarium:

And a couple of closeups:

I put the XL into a large plastic bin and then opened up the glass panel and top of the outworld. Then while I used a keyboard vacuum to suck up all the workers, my son used the THA specimen tweezer to transplant the repletes into the XXL. I had plugged up the outworld hole so I could dump all the workers into the outworld without them escaping. Here’s a pic of about 90% of all the workers in the XXXL outworld. The rest of the workers were stubborn to leave and I had to tweeze the rest out.

And finally the XXXL assembled in its spot on my ant shelf and a couple of closeups:

I have a couple cool videos too. I just have to figure out where to host them. I’ll post updated pictures as the colony grows into their new home. Again, thanks to Mack at THA for such an amazing custom formicarium and awesome customer service as usual. Thanks for looking!

Lol you aren't kidding!  The order was a bit complicated in that he couldn't use his usual museum glass because the size of the pane.  I didn't want to cheap out on the glass quality and wanted low iron glass, so he had to find a suitable substitute.  And thanks!

I forget exactly but I wanna say like 4 years?

Nice nest!!!

I have two questions

How long did it take to make and be delivered?
How much was the investment?

That colony is insane!!!! Is this the biggest colony of this species ever documented? Does anyone know? It must have taken you ages to individually transfer the stubborn ones! That colony my is a real show piece!!!!

So that’s the Pioneer XL on the bottom shelf. What’s amazing is I remember getting my first XL years ago and thinking THAT it was huge!

Yup and I can’t wait!

Well it took a few months. I wanna say at least like 5? But that included the design period too. Since Mack hadn’t made anything like this before, it took a while to work out the unique details, such as finding a suitable glass as I mentioned before. And I’m sure finding supplies during Covid was a challenge too. One feature I really like about the XXXL is that there are 8 total water towers. That’s a double amount of space to place eggs and larvae!

And I honestly don’t remember the total cost but it was over $1k. I really didn’t cheap out on anything and didn’t go with a lot of the cheaper options Mack presented to me. (Maybe I forgot on purpose just in case my wife walks by my computer and sees this screen :)

Oh I don’t know about that but I don’t think I’ve seen a larger colony yet. It wasn’t too bad with the transfer since my son was helping me. Unfortunately, we did lose a few repletes but I think that’s gonna happen regardless. What gets messy is the sugar water exploding everywhere making everything sticky. You gotta clean that up quick before the other ants track through it.

So a lot of the workers have settled down into the nest. Here’s a few recent pictures:

This week’s meal:

gallery_1484_2125_2720655.jpeg

The glass stayed clean and clear for like a hot minute:

gallery_1484_2125_1529143.jpeg

As I mentioned there’s double the water towers now so it looks like the nurses are especially specializing each tower for a different egg phase:

That’s about it for this update. More to come. Thanks for looking!

Wow I think this colony is larger than the six-year-old colony I have living in that giant vase dirt setup.
