They're massive, but C. quercicola is pretty much the same, just black and stubbier legs.

I seen both queens. I think Ca02 is at least 2 millimeters longer than quercicolas. When my queens may them rest in peace. Lolol drink nectar. They would reach 21mm.

I never had Pogonomyrmex colonies. Lots of people like them. A giant species of Pogonomyrmex live 15 minutes away from home. They are a bit shorter than cokerelli workers. maybe 10mm long, but have massive heads. I fear their sting. I always get attacked when handling my colonies. They do lack stingers. Thank god. What are the plus side of having Pogonomyrmex colonies.?

Colony 1:


This colony has around 50ish workers. They have a nice group of lazy medians that are couch potatoes and are getting bigger and bigger for each new generation. They're the biggest ca02 colony I have and they love to try and escape. Hope to see a major soon.


Colony 2:

This colony currently has around 50ish workers. They're rich in brood and use their outworld as a living room. They currently have a few medians and I hope to expect a major soon!

Colony 3:

My third and final ca02 colony has around 29 workers. They sleep on a bed made of brood and is my most timid colony. Even though their fluon barrier is gone, they never really try to escape. I'll have to replace the barrier soon. Also medians and majors are yet to appear.

So jealous. I lost both my colonies last year. Only 2 colonies left. In my collection. 1 camponotus Fragilis around 10000 workers, and 1 novomessor cokerelli. 2000 workers. I will like to get another sure. Of these species. To put in my biggest terrarium.

What happened to your ca02?

1 colony with 15 workers. Are fine the night I checked. The next morning there was a yellow fungus. All workers dead. Queen was upside down moving it's legs. She died a few days later. The 2nd colony. Had around 19 workers. I saw the yellow fungus in the cotton inside their tube. So I moved them to a new started formicarium. With a little out world. The queen got spooked. The whole colony moved and into he nest. She would run around the out world for days non stop, until she died. I think she wanted to find a new nest. Her workers died a few month ago. They lived for 11 months.

Could it have been an Aspergillus sp.? That's what killed my colonies:

Aspergillus typically grows on already dead material, at least in my experience. It is likely that your ants were killed by other causes, at which point the mold rapidly advanced on their corpses.

Well, sadly, some people think that jet black ants are "dull".

They're massive, but C. quercicola is pretty much the same, just black and stubbier legs.

 

I saw some ca02 in person and they have MUCH larger majors.  HUGE.  biggest quercicola majors i ever found were like 15mm max
