Yeah, think of it like pruning the colony. Couldn’t they sting your fish though? I guess you could pre-kill them.

antscanada's solenopsis geminata colony doesnt bother or sting his fish.

Anyone have ideas for other interesting things to add to the vivarium?  Pill bugs are scarce right now and i can't seem to find any springtails (maybe due to our drought).  So far i added lichen and moss, some branches, pennywort and black river stones.  I'll add an updated pic soon.

any other live creatures to add that can benefit besides pillbugs and springtails?

Given how aggressive fire ants are, I think they would kill the earthworms.

I don't think there's any other creatures you can add to the formicarium, even the pill bugs may end up being food for the ants.

My Tetramorium straight up killed every pill bug, earthworm, millipede, and woodroach I put in their tank. The only things that survived the blitzkrieg were a certain white springtail that I find living along side wild nests.

does this depend on the species? will a more timid ant accept roommates?

Definitely species dependent. He is dealing with one of the most aggressive species known to man.

I fed them a cricket leg last night and the swarm was about 13-15 ants so i guess the colony is growing.  I have one pill bug that walked buy and ran into an ant but SO FAR they ignored it.  it wasnt until the pill bug walked over the nest entrance did 2 come out and chase it off but didn't pursue.

Plants seem to be growing :D

That’s impressive for such a young colony. Definitely make a journal and post pictures of the set up.
I’d start giving them whole crickets if that many are coming out.

ants are burying crickets for some reason, must be religous.  They dug out the top left sandy corner for...whatever reason (trying to appease me, their god?) And have started building a mound in the center.
