turn on your porch lights at dusk and wait for some queens to fly to the light or just go out and try to find queens

Question for Hightlyze: Are you looking for a long term ant farm(a functional colony with a queen), or a short term colony, with only workers

I'll do the old way. Kidnap and release

And that's why all your ants die

Read this http://www.formicult...tch-queen-ants/

I advise not to engage in antkeeping until you catch your queen

Without having a queen in the colony the workers die faster than if there was one. I’m pretty sure someone said this already.

While I think collecting worker ants from the wild to put them in a terrarium are perfectly fine for the joys of observation, like many are saying in this thread, those tend to be the oldest workers in the colony and will have a much shorter life span than you might expect.

I see you are also located in the Philippines. This might also hugely contribute to why your workers died too fast in your home. If you have AC in your house, it was likely far too cold for them to survive as they are use to warm and humid climates.

How to find queens:

                               1: you research

                               2: you look

How to keep ants:

                              1: you research

                              2: you keep ants

How to not kill your ants:

                             1: you research

2: you get common sense regarding pets

3: you don't kill you ants

I know I'm being sarcastic and pessimistic(and I'm sorry if you feel attacked), but If I can keep hypoponera as my first ants and catch 20 + queens in a night in the middle of dry, drought ravaged California, you can find and keep ants in the Philippines. If you don't have enough time or patience and can't remember to even FEED your ants, you need to either learn or find a new hobby. Not trying to discourage you, just giving you solid advice that all pet keepers and parents need to know. Also, my how to list actually basically explains how to keep ants. Spend some time doing research. Knowledge is key. Hope you can learn to appreciate the hobby and the community surrounding it.

I think this only applies if you can keep them alive for more than a day

It might be, check for wing scars. Only queens will have them.

that's a queen! Put her in a test tube with cotton and water and give her insects and sugar water. Please remember to feed her this time!
