Not sure if someone answered your honey question. What I suggest is to get a bit of aluminum foil or wax paper. Place a honey drop it and place it on the front of the test tube. Make sure you put the cotton back. Its keeps the test tube clean and easier to remove.

For a protein source you could also just find crickets near your home. Either freeze or boil them so any diseases die. Feed only a small section of the cricket, like the leg, to the ant. Similarly place the portion of the insect on some aluminum or wax paper.

Another protien source I have seen people mention are the small house spider you see. Freeze or boil it. Not sure if your species have ant has certain preference or dislike. Something else I do, but may not be recommended depending on sensitive the ant is to feed your colony commercial meet. Sometimes I feed my colony a very small piece of turkey ham. You just need to be careful the product may have some chemicals or something that might be unfavorable for ants.

After reading this thread in it's entirety, I've decided to only accept ant keeping suggestions from Hightlyze, Keeper of Ants, Master of Words, Philosopher of The Soul.

Make sure to remove food as soon as they are done, so no mold or bacteria builds up.
