Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Haha. Myrmica and Manica are one of the ants I am going to try very hard to keep. Especially the Manica. I think Ill be able to keep them. Ill be able to feed them a steady stream of argentines. I hope to get many Myrmica on a black light this summer.(I'm sure they'll be fine, and won't just die)

I could get Myrmica, but not Manica. Apparently they have been recorded in the state, but I haven’t seen one in my life.

They would only be in high-elevation, far west areas.

They were probably recorded in the Black Hills, then. It’s technically a small mountain range (the highest peak is taller than anything in the Appalachians, even.)

  This colony has lots of brood, over a hundred pupae, and like 75 larvae, and hundreds of eggs. They have been enjoying THA's sugar part of the ant-juice and food supplement in a liquid feeder. I had been giving them a mealworm every other day, and noticed they were not attacking them with the same enthusiasm as before. I assumed they were full. I gave them 2 days, and today, I gave them an extremely pesky house fly I killed with an electric swatter. They are attacking it with gusto! I guess they wanted some variety.

Oh, BTW, construction on the native paludarium might be beginning soon! These will have the biggest island, and I have some really cool plants that I will add!

They have a male pupa! And like 700 workers. I will post pics of the pupa in a little bit! :yahoo: :yahoo:

 

I can't wait till they get a few hundred more workers, and fill the formicarium that they are in, so I can make a paludarium to move them into.  They will have the biggest island, and will be the farthest from the glass.

My new queen is just chilling on the wet cotton. She still has her wings on and hasn’t laid anything yet. How long do these usually take to lay? I’m really pumped for this species.
In other news, I officially gave up on Nerdbox neoniger today. Five months was long enough to wait.

She could have been infertile, 5 months is not normal.  Mine laid within a few days, but the eggs took a while to develop. She should lay quite a lot of eggs too.

2 months is max, even if the queen’s not heated.
