Me want too ^^^

Soysauce wants everything!

Over the past few years, Drew and I have come up with a few easier to spell alternative names for some of these species when discussing them amongst ourselves.

Some examples:

C. coca cola

C. lasagna

C. fraggle rock

P. raguesauce

C. salsabeans

M. mexicans

I won't go into what we came up with for N. cockerelli or P. tenuispinis.

Report: Nothing is flying in Trabuco canyon. May 9th (today), storm clouds spotted over southern Orange County, and an overall warm feeling in the air.

I was watching the rain reports and it seems like east of Oceanside got some decent rain of over an inch. But like Drew said, it doesn't seem like it going to get hot enough.

May head up the local mountains (San Gabriel Mountains), but the temp keeps changing. Now the forecast says not as hot, so may not go.

I assumed Pogonomyrmex californicus would be flying tomorrow, but it looks like they already started today. I'll be running the black light in the canyon tomorrow night, as it should be about 72F around 9:00 PM. The humidity is a little low with it being Santa Ana wind conditions, but I think there's still a good chance something will be flying as long as it's not too windy. I do know that P. californicus, which fly during the day, have flown plenty of times when it was as windy as can be.

It's amazing to me that you have even a rough idea of the day specific species will be flying.

What exactly are you looking for? I imagine it just takes years of experience to figure this stuff out.

Well if you know the month they typically fly in, and you know the weather conditions they fly in, it will usually happen the first time you see those weather conditions in that specific time period.

Most of that data is kept and available in the Mating Chart.

Haha the bearded ladies. I wouldn't be keeping them together though; you'll probably lose most of them that way.

I actually saw them digging a founding chamber together, first time I've ever seen that. The area I found them in (east hemet) is thick with the polygyne variety so I think this is a pretty safe bet

(cue them all dying)

I've looked at that chart countless times, but never realized there was a lot more information in the comments.

Thanks!

The concolorous variety of P. californicus are really fickle to rear. I would put some dirt in the test tube (but bake it first). They don't settle well unless there is some kind of substrate. And yea, what Drew said... I would separate them and increase your chances of success (unless you found tons of them).

I'm kind of wondering if Formica francoeuri might fly today, if they haven't already.
