Location:  O'Neill Regional Park, Orange County, California.
Habitat:  Oak forest.
Coloration, Dark red head and thorax, orange gaster, orange legs, black mandibles.
Length:  4mm - 6mm.
Distinguishing characteristics:  Small eyes.
When I came across these ants, they were walking in a dense trail. I followed the trail to what looked like a nest in the ground in a grassy area. After about 5 minutes, I noticed the trail had ended and the last part of it was just moving into the nest.
These ants go crazy whenever I breathe on them the slightest bit.
I also notice they have zero interest in honey, so it was very hard to get clear pictures of them
