Hello, I am very new to this ant keeping thing which I am sure will get extremely interesting as time goes on and I will most likely ask a lot of questions early on  because again I am an amateur. As of now I only have two queens and I would like to any helpful tips anyone can offer.

Welcome to the forum nicknamed Califormiculture because of the amount of Californians on it... I am sure we can help you in every way.

You should have a lot of Solenopsis invicta around you. Huge portions of Riverside has tons of those. I went all over Riverside and saw huge (1-3 foot tall) mounds all over, amongst Argentine ant areas.

If you get out of the city, Forelius pruinosus/mccooki remain active year round in most places. They are easy to get too, but most don't tend to fly...they bud out. I guess they do fly, but none of the ones I've seen do. They are a great ant species to keep though. Vastly easier just getting a queen (or queens) with some workers, as starting with just one queen is a lot harder than a lot of other queens in other species.

It also skipped most of Winter in southern California, so ant season should be a LOT earlier than elsewhere. Here in Irvine (Orange County), it got to 81 degrees today!

Welcome.

If you haven't seen it already, take a browse through this thread.  http://www.formicult...of-handy-links/

I suspect the 1st and 3rd ones inside will be of great interest to you if you have not seen them before.  :D

I think he was referring to the fact there are so many people who like ants in the Southwest, but making it clearer would have been nice.

I need to move to Arizona...

I don't think I would mind living in AZ.   I like the Flagstaff area.

That is a shame, but the major flights will be starting only in a month, so you can catch more! :D
