Anyone have plans to hunt for queen ants? If so, where??? I'm just curious where everyone is going. I may try the Cleveland National forest again. It seemed pretty pristine and busy there. I'm hoping to collect a couple 3 more yellow honeypots. Maybe an early flying harvester...

If you guys have suggestions I'm cool with driving places-- I live in Hemet which is significantly more east than the rest of you

It is not warming up right after the rains and will remain cool. We're going to have to wait til the temperature and humidity rises. I'm looking at the mountains but none of those places are warming up after the rains (in fact, some spots are getting even colder).

I'll be heading to both Cleveland National Forest and Anza Borrego Desert State Park, on Thursday and Friday. Maybe sleep it out in the desert if the 1st day doesn't work out. Also on the 3rd day, maybe Monsurate Mountain, depending on how many I catch. Maybe I'll see you at CNF?

Going anywhere in the mountains and foothills right after this rain will be pointless. We need a heatwave before anything is going to fly. It will be hot in the desert, but unless they get rain, there probably won't be anything flying there either.

So would Anza Borrego Desert State Park be okay to go to? It will rain and the next day, it will warm up.

Well I figured since they flew a week ago when I was there, they should've mated and dug their founding chambers by now and with the recent rain, hopefully it'll moisten the ground up enough to dig.

If I find nothing, oh well at least I know I'll get a good hike in. Any reason to go out anting

You don't want it to rain again after a flight because they wash away the founding chambers.

 

If you do see fresh founding chambers, than they are new and from the most recent rain.

Gotcha.  I can't really get out there until after this weekend anyway.  Hopefully it'll warm up soon.

I dunno about elsewhere. But, the rain pretty much fizzled and died (typical, figured as much) in orange county. I'm looking at the radar, and don't even see anything around at all. Maybe there'll be showers or something.

 

So far, its been a typical southern california junk of a "storm". Where it either breaks apart as it hits shore (I see that A LOT. Watching the radar, heavy and amazing looking rain, and as soon as it touches the shore, it dies right away), or rains/drizzles very little and nothing else. Nothing at all like Northern California has had.

 

Hopefully it does more, but so far it looks like another storm fail.

I went out today (3/21/17) and found Veromessor pergandei and a Pogonomyrmex sp. flew this morning or the previous night.

Wow. It's like they're flying every day this season. I'll bet the Pogonomyrmex is P. magnacanthus. Do you have any pictures of it?
