Canyon Drive is only 10 minutes from my area, what type of queens have you found there?

I would lean towards C. clarithorax. C. yogi is extremely unlikely.

This looks like C. clarithorax. The fact you found her in an urban environment makes it even more likely. Used to have a colony of these gals (found the queen in my apartment bathroom) until I accidentally fed them an apple with pesticide which slowly and painfully killed the entire colony.

Makes sense. How often is C. yogi found? I know I have only found it one time. It's also hard to find any information on them online.

Yeah C. clarithorax flies pretty early. I know I found that C. yogi in September, which is pretty late for Camponotus. It's hard to judge when a species flies by finding one queen, but it is something to consider.

If its face looks like it was dipped in acid, then that's it.

I just ordered a macro lense, it should be here Monday or Tuesday. I'll update with a head shot when it gets here because I don't think my real camera is gonna be able to get a clear enough shot.

Great find! I've noticed a much greater diversity of species in urban OC compared to LA. I travel to GG quite frequently, if you and your son need any assistance or supplies, feel free to ask.

I agree with Batspiderfish . (Edit: his first post) To me it actually looks exactly like the Camponotus yogi I found years ago. That of course is actually from the subgenus Myrmaphaenus though, which is also small like Myrmentoma. If it's not C. yogi, I would guess C. clarithorax. Finding it on your house makes that even more likely. Either way, that's amazing you found Camponotus in urban/suburban Orange County. I have never been able to find them anywhere West of Santiago Canyon Drive.

Can you try to get a good picture of its face?

Edit: It's definitely not Liometopum.

Clearest shot I could get of her face. It's definitely pitted in spots but I can't get a good picture in the test tube, every time I got it to somewhat focus she would move.

This is what I have in terms of adding more space but still keeping her in a smaller area, I have other test tubes I can attach as well.

 

I've seen these around the net a few times. Where does one get these foraging boxes for test tubes?
