Was under a rock, and was skinny, so presumably flew long ago.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

You have to look where you see puddles and mud. Stop on the side of the highway and look around. They're all over that area that got rain. You have to look for founding chambers, not queens.

Ha! After I sent the reply. We stopped by a puddle and found a pheidole nuptial flight occurring.

Yeah, right now you might find some queens flying again or running around, but most of what you want has to be dug up.

I was looking for founding chambers where I only found small colonies of ants, but not puddles, thanks!

Species: Temnothorax sp., Pheidole sp., Crematogaster sp. Dorymyrmex insanus
Location: Mountain Center, CA
Date: 8/22/2020
Time: 8:00 p.m.
Humidity: High, maybe about 70-85%
Temperature: mid 70s-low 80s
Wind: None at all
Rain: Previous afternoon, 8/21/2020, it rained 1.15 inches in a decent sized region.
Notes: The Crematogaster were everywhere, same with Pheidole. The Temnothorax queens were on a blacklight, and males easily outnumbered them 3:1 or maybe even 4:1

Species: Camponotus semitestaceus, Solenopsis xyloniPheidole sp.

Location: Anza, CA
Date: 8/22/2020
Time: 10:30 p.m.
Humidity: high, 80%+
Temperature: mid 70s
Wind: slight breeze, not much to be noted. probably less than 3 mph
Rain: previous day, 8/21/2020
Notes: Solenopsis were sparse, unwinged, Pheidole were pretty common, digging chambers, unwinged. Camponotus could be found in small hotspots, with around 3-6 queens in a short distance, and then none for a minute or so of walking. Some were digging chambers, but most were just wandering. All the queens I saw were wingless, they had probably flown in the morning or the previous night, then just came out that night.
