Hi I'm from California (central valley to be precise) and was wondering what ants are generally advised in my area. I've noticed that some species I need a permit to import but I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just a starting colony to get my feet wet.

also If you could provide links to websites or sellers that would be apretiated.

Great beginner colonies in California are Lasius, Camponotus, Pogonomyrmerex, and Tetramorium.
