Sorry for your loss but definitely not Camponotus chromaiodes think they are Norther States.

there's records of them in cali they are dubious

The only "record" in California for C. chromaiodes is a Bugguide.net observation that had a misidentification, typical of bugguide.net having horrible identifications. Turned out to be a Formica species and Antmaps.org just hasn't removed the record off the database. Here is the link to the Bugguide.net page.
