Local libraries offer 3d printers for use. Although IDK with the pandemic issues if they're still freely available for use.

Really? but wouldn't it take a long time to print the formicarium? also, what would they think if you printed a box, asked you what its for and you say ants lol

Haven’t you already been given that look by strangers when your searching/catching queen ants? Every time I go out to catch wasps/ants there are people who look at me like I’ve gone mad. lol

this is my first year, so technically i havn't got that much of a look. Wait, actually, i dug up some Argies to kill them, so i guess that counts.

I tried digging up argies. Workers swarmed all over me, I looked crazy, frantically digging into the ground, and I never found the main nest. I only got a concerned person asking me where my parents where (my dad was looking for queen wasps a few feet away

Great times, ya know?

I would suggest not using PLA for formicariums, especially if it comes in contact with water. After year or two PLA will start crumbling.

Yeah I do plan to use stronger materials for final versions.

This is the first I am hearing about this. Is it from first hand knowledge or PLA hearsay on the internet? Either way, would you normally use ABS?

I use PLA, because its non-toxic for ants, does not usually need a heating bed and has a low melting point relative to other filaments. It's also easy to get.

Yes! Looking forward to seeing it in action. Would these be for sale, by chance?

I use PLA for my nests and vials, because it prints true to size and doesn't warp very much. I haven't had any issues with it being in contact with moisture (yet).

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

This seems like something that Pogonomyrmex would do great in, I may get these if they aren't to expensive because THA gonna be getting real expensive for me soon.
