I would like to keep some ants by Christmas and would like to buy some ants under $40. camponotus are good, but I would prefer them non hibernating species(since I can't get them anyway if they are hibernating). also, unless they can ship, i want them southern California area. (somewhere between san Diego and Irvine so I can pick up)

If you are looking specifically for non-hibernating beginner cheap(ish) species, I can think of two...  Tetramorium, and (most) pogonomyrmex.  There are lots of sellers in California, so you could check GAN, or look on here for Cali sellers.

bah. another one that needs hibernation https://www.formicul...d-time-isopods/

i can't seem to find that one that sells the ones that don't need hibernation. camponotus is a great species to keep. i would highly recommend them.

They're a great species to keep, adaptable and fast growing. I'd recommend them.

I sell Camponotus fragilis, but they are $50 in a tube setup for 1-10 workers and $58 with formicarium.  They make a great beginner species as they are hardy and can grow quickly if you heat and feed them often.

Dorymyrmex insanus don't hibernate. Solenopsis xyloni is another great choice if you're all about the growth speed.

C. fragilis do not hibernate as they are caught in the desert.  D. insanus also do not hibernate
