I am probably going to get some Pogonomyrmex occidentalis this holiday season. So I need seeds. I have heard that sometimes Pogonomyrmex won't accept some seeds that most species will. Unfortunately the seed mix on THA is rather expensive. Is there somewhere else where I could get seeds for Pogonomyrmex at a cheaper price?

Chia and flax are the most liked by these and if they can they will only eat these, mostly chia though. If you want a good healthy and big colony feeding them roaches chrickets seeds and termites.

My colony rejects chia seeds and only eats dandelion seeds. They used to take shelled hemp seeds but I ran out of them. Mine also took oatmeal.

Go to any grocery store that sells bulk grains and seeds by weight. Whole Foods would be an example.

Below are where I get my seeds (all organic, no additives, etc, etc):

1) Sesame seeds - any grocery store, spice aisle

2) Hemp seeds - Sprouts (or equivalent market in your area) health section aisle

3) Poppy seeds - Sprouts bulk seed aisle

4) Sunflower seeds - any grocery store, produce section

5) Quinoa seeds - Sprouts bulk bin section

6) Kentucky bluegrass seeds - eBay

7) Dandelion seeds - eBay

I spent about $10 for 1 - 5, and about $15-20 for 6 - 7 due to shipping. I have multiple colonies and based on consumption rate, I think it'll last me for at least a year... I keep a large portion air tight vacuum bags and open as needed (for ants or in some cases my own consumption). I keep some handy in glass spice jars and sprinkle in outworlds as needed.

Hope this helps.
