Is the secondary vent tube for the hydration just open to the vial inside so humidity can get into the living space?

The needle makes an airtight seal with the tubing, which stops the water from properly filling the reservoir. The second tube is a sort of vent to stop the system from being airtight, but it has the added benefits of helping with hydration. If the reservoir is intentionally overfilled, water tends to form small droplets around the base of the second tube, which the ants will drink from.

A small disclaimer was added to the vials. On a more positive note though, the testing colonies are thriving and we plan to put a 2-worker Lasius colony in one of them.
