Species 1 - Pheidole dentigula(?)

 

1. Location of collection: Front driveway, under black light (early morning)
2. Date of collection: 5-14-15
3. Habitat of collection: pine/oak flatwoods w/clearings
4. Length (from head to gaster): 3.5mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Orange
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Abdomen is normally transparent; dark gut spot noticeable
7. Anything else distinctive: 
8. Nest description: Never uncovered a nest with alates - they probably nest in soil

Species 2 - Pheidole floridana(?)

 

1. Location of collection: Driveway, under blacklight (early morning)
2. Date of collection: 5-14-15
3. Habitat of collection: pine/oak flatwoods w/clearings
4. Length (from head to gaster): 3.6mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Head/thorax dark orange, abdomen dark/rusty brown
6. Distinguishing characteristics: 
7. Anything else distinctive: 
8. Nest description: Nests in soil. Numerous small mounds in close proximity.

Species 3 - Pheidole sp.
 
1. Location of collection: driveway (late morning)
2. Date of collection: 5-15-15
3. Habitat of collection: pine/oak flatwoods w/clearings
4. Length (from head to gaster): 2.8-3mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: lightish orange
6. Distinguishing characteristics: 
7. Anything else distinctive: Smallest Pheidole I've encountered
8. Nest description: Never encountered a nest, must be extremely inconspicuous

You guys sure have a lot of Pheidole down there. I can hardly ever get any of ours ID'd.
