my Myrmecocystus mexicanus queen finally had larva...covering w/ sand

My Myrmecocystus mexicanus finally has larva but she seems to be covering them with sand is this normal? I think i seen it on the forum but cannot find it.

Yes. Coating larva with a substrate is a essential part in becoming a pupae, as it helps them spin a cocoon. This usually happens near the end of the larvae period of an ant though.

Yes all honeypots do this. Don't get to excited yet. If your Mexicanus queen is from this season and she hasn't had workers yet, she has a long ways to go. Try not to keep disturbing or looking at her, she will eat her brood.
