i think for the best sand coating ( like tarheel ) is using sand for making the chambers instead of clay.

Really nice. I would want to live in there! Sand/vermiculite mix can work well to make the chamber as well as sand, for added humidity and shininess.

I wonder as tarheel use clay or sand to form the chambers.but we will may never know
You can use pva glue or something similar which does not contain solvents to glue the sand to plaster or other material like ytong. The material won't be able to release water because it is sealed by the glue + sand but if you use a water tower it doesn't matter.
How in the world would one form chambers out of sand? I’ve heard this mentioned before, but sand wouldn’t hold any shape.
I’ve heard this before and i thought that tarheel use only sand.use he clay for making the chambers and glue for the beautiful sand coating?

I saw a Youtube video. Can't find it now, sorry. The sand needs to be wet to keep its shape. Then you pour the plaster/grout/concrete. Once it's set, remove the sand and you have a nice sand-lined chamber.
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. -Proverbs 6: 6-8
