Ants4Fun’s Pogonomyrmex colony’s pretty impressive.

It does look very cool.

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. -Proverbs 6: 6-8

I would like a colony of inch ants to show to people…
That would get their attention!

I'm in a local nature group on FB, and someone photographed this lovely lass on their fence the other day…

Genus Myrmecia (bull ants) also have a very painful and potentially dangerous sting.

Yeah, looks like it  That would be a cool colony to keep, but it would be very dangerous though, because of their chompers :)

Apparently this is a picture of a Myrmecia queen, she looks just like the workers! She just has a bigger abdomen.

There are a few YouTube channels that show captive Myrmecia, such as AusAnts, Ant Invasion, etc. Yet due to their large size, they’re poor climbers and super easy to contain (except Myrmecia pilosula, the ‘jack jumper ant’, which is smaller and can jump.)

Haha ok I’m not the type of person you would look at and think she’s an ant keeper, geek or nerd. My hobbies usually surprise people so if I tell someone I keep ants they are either interested or think it’s weird. Either way I don’t care. I keep them for me. I don’t have any ant keeping friends/acquaintances or maybe I do and I just don’t know it because they feel embarrassed to share it. I have been interested in ants most of my life but stopped keeping for years because it wasn’t as popular when I was a kid and the internet wasn’t what it is today so I had many failed attempts. Now I only keep one colony simply because I have a busy life and I have lots of other pets to look after already. My boyfriend (pretty much husband) isn’t into ants but he doesn’t judge me. I can tell he doesn’t really care when I run too tell him how excited I am that my queen has a massive brood pile etc but he humours me and sometimes I think he is a bit intrigued...he even caught a queen he came across just in case I wanted to keep her. Now that’s love isn’t it! Same with family and friends I guess...some are curious and some don’t really care. Haha usually if someone is interested they will ask more questions but if they don’t I just don’t carry on about it.
I guess what I’m saying is be you and do it for you. When you’re older it won’t matter what your classmates, family or friends think about it. If you are single and are having a hard time finding that special someone that accepts your ant hobby they simply weren’t right for you and move on.

People think it's weird. I once told a few of my friends about it and someone spread the message to the whole school. Now most kids think I'm crazy.

You will go far in life. It’s way better to have your own hobbies and do your own thing, the earlier the better.

don't forget Myrmecia nigrocinta. They are bigger than jack jumpers, and can jump as well.  Most people just think it's rather odd, but I am at least still respected by the majority of people at my school.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Hey, Jean- how are your Crematogasters? My colony is massive now, plus I have a new colony just starting!

I absolutely love it! Its changed my life! I've always been a nature nut and playing god with ants, watching and learning is healing.

I go out everyday in the summer.

Also I have always found it hard to find people like me. I'm sure many on here are similar to me. Go to the club? I'd rather catch frogs! Lol.

Most people just don't care about nature, critters and slimy things. It's always been my strong spot.

There's are 3 reactions

1: Oh that's so cool! (Asks away about what I do)

2: I prefer lizards or reptiles

3: Are you crazy!

My dream colony (rn at least) would be Aphenogaster Fulva. They are easy to keep, beautiful with their coloration, and are somewhat harvester ants! So yeah, seems like a wonderful species to me, and I'll be looking for 'em this season!

When the son decided to bring the ants home, at first we all took it with great surprise :)

But now I myself became very interested in them and with great pleasure I help him, sometimes it even seems to me that I worry about them even more than he :)
