This c.maritimus colony has about 13 workers. They basically eat anything I feed them except fruit flies. Its strange how none of my ants like fruit flies. At the front of their test tube soil is used to block off most of the entrance. So whenever I feed them, I destroy the wall they made and than they just rebuild it. They're gonna need an outworld soon.

If you're wondering why my C.Maritimus have dirt inside their test tube, I wanted to test out what the C.Maritimus would do with the dirt. They blocked the back of the living area with the dirt and partly blocked the front of the tube.

My pictures will get better eventually...

Its strange how none of my ants like fruit flies.

Probably because you don't keep many small ants.

That's very true. I'm assuming small ants love fruit flies...

Ok I can make an update on this journal soon, but pictures will be harder to take, as they like to run to the dark when I try to feed them.

This journal update has been postponed for two weeks, as by the time I remembered to update my journals the maritimus already went into hiding. Sorry!

They probably have around 50-60 workers i would assume, as I don't really count as they like to bundle up when shown to light. Need tips?

Sounds like they are a healthy colony. Congrats

I bought a queen with 9 workers (I actually counted them this time) and few larvae in a test tube setup form Nurb Last weekend. My first time meeting him and a really friendly guy. Hey Nurb !

I am always open to any tips and information please send this way. I also keep bees and a joke amongst bee keepers is "If you ask 10 bee keepers the same question. You'll get 11 different answers." I'm not sure how the world of anting is compared to bee keeping. But I am excited to find out. Nurb put together an amazing PDF that seems pretty straight forward.

I purchased a TarHeelAnt Fortress type lll that should be here by this weekend. I also have two kids that are 4 and 5 that help me out with bee keeping here and there. They are both very excited to dive into the world of ants.

Oh nice! Maritimus can get very annoying if stressed out, so beware.

i am sure your kids will love it. My favorite genus right now is camponotus because of their size and easy ability to see. hope you enjoy!
