Hey all

Found a really strange looking ant today. Very lucky find.

It seems like it is a Rhytidoponera spp. But i have never seen any online with its colours!

 

1.Location: far south coast NSW Australia 

2. Date of collection: Today! 18th April

3. Habitat of collection: grassland surrounded by forest. 

4. Length: 5mm

5. Observations: The only other time i have seen this species before was when i was checking out an iridomermex colony under a fence post cap. Amid the iridomermex was one lone worker. Possibly a species that feeds on larvae?

I would say that is Rytidoponera. No idea on species though.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

rhytidoponera, no id on species, atrophid wings so likely unfertile, umless mated in nest. Nice find.

I think some Rhytidoponera have ergatoid queens. Anyway, I can't wait to see how she does. Fascinating ant.

rhytidoponera, no id on species, atrophid wings so likely unfertile, umless mated in nest. Nice find.

 

Not really sure how that can be the case. It was found on someones glove, i will have to check, but i'm pretty sure it flew there.

I was thinking that was a hind wing.  :unknown:
