I have heard of species which are capable of nesting together in the wild, but I have never seen it myself, and I've certainly never heard of it being gone in captivity!

Yes, that's exactly what they were doing in the log. their nests we touching, and there were some Aphaenogaster workers in the Crematogaster nest and vice versa.

I often see dorymyrmex insanus nesting in an P. occidentalis nest of within 1 foot of a P. occidentalis nest.
1X Pogonomyrmex occidentalis 40-50 Workers
1X Solenopsis molesta 10 Workers (mono)

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Well, they STILL refuse to stop production, and as a result, they've just about outgrown their Mini Hearth. I've had to add a test tube to the side connection port for them to store their hundreds of extra brood! Currently there's been an average of about 150 workers with the brood pile in the tube at all times, with about 10 majors accompanying them. They've been eating a large superworm every 2 days or so, and downing an entire liquid feeder full of sugar water each week. I've got some pictures that turned out decent, too.
I'm working on getting decent pics of my other ants that aren't in hibernation, so watch out for the next update here in a bit.
Also, try to count how many majors/major pupae are in those pics!

I found a colony of some interesting Formicinae. I've already run them through a key, and I know what they are, but do you?

I found this small colony (likely from this year's flights) in a small hickory nut. The queen's got 7-9 workers and a couple larvae. I'm excited to watch them grow!

Being that Pheidole sp is probably one of my favorite genus (they've overall been some of my favorite captive ants outside Acromyrmex, though way easier to keep)...but that colony really looks impressive. Always had a soft spot for Pheidole of all kinds, especially the native ones.

Thanks! I've been feeding them an exceptional amount of food lately, lol. I've found that I really enjoy all sorts of Attini, though Pheidole and Trachymyrmex are the only ones I've actually kept.

If I remember correctly, there's 2 yellow species that are practically indistinguishable from each other, I'd only be able to narrow it down to that.
