How would I acquire the fungus these ants grow, and is the fungus a necessity for them? Thanks in advance.

Yes the fungus is a necessity for them. Maybe someone will sell you some.
I wonder how you get it though XD

Queens bring a small deposit with them when they have their nuptial flight.

Do they really?!???! Sweet and sour jesus, them ants are cool. ..well..in theory they just need the spore to start the fungus deposit (yeah?) ..but..I'm going to pretend catalysts and things. But really when they get stalactites/mites of fungus that's amazing.

I think one of the harder parts of getting a founding queen with no donated fungus, is actually a lot of the time the queen no longer has the fungus. They dig the nest and drop it. And pretty sure they are semi-claustral as well, which makes it harder.
All the fungus growers are really cool though, and very rewarding to keep. Once the fungus gets growing nicely, and they start growing new fungus gardens (at least my Acromyrmex versicolor are doing that)...it gets quite a lot easier. Starting them off seems to be the hard part of it at all.
Hope you can figure it out but I think it best to ask around for some starting fungi.
