From my experience, I usually see Camponotus queens walking around the afternoon/evening after a flight.

I caught 3 Crematogaster Cerasi queens in the beginning of September,

1 Camponotus Pennsylvanicus in August. (:

2 of the Crematogaster were caught on the sidewalk, the other under some bark.

The camponotus queen was found under a log.

I also caught 1 Aphaenogaster Rudis in a small puddle in September, in my backyard.

All caught during the day, Aphaenogaster in the morning.

In Wisconsin.

I'm hiking on the Chaney trail now and I went down to the campground so far. I haven't found any live queens yet but I found this ginormous dead one so far:

I've also found about a dozen dead drones too:

IMG_4676.jpg

Finding founding chambers here in the foothills are a lot harder than the desert! Darn these hiking stick holes too! They make me think I see a founding chamber every 3 or 4 feet! I think I picked up a few rat or mouse poop too :(

Nice! Most likely C. Sansabeanus.

EDIT: On closer inspection (need better shots) this could be Myrmecocystus .

Is this a queen or just a very large ant?
