1. Location of collection: Directly from colony.
2. Date of collection: 1-19-2015
3. Habitat of collection: Creek Bed.
4. Length (from head to gaster): Not measured. (Sorry! :( It was a fast ant!)
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Brown
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Very fast.
7. Nest description: Under a rock.

It does look like Formica aerata like you suggested, but all the records are in Central California and up.
