so I've had my what i think is a carpenter ant for almost a year now and no eggs I'm 100% positive its a queen but has never laid eggs is this normal? i caught it just before winter.

She may be infertile.

Milta is quite sure it is a Formica sp., change that in the post. Also, it is better to not use common names as it can be confusing. Camponotus = Carpenter ant (usually)

Does she still have wings? If a queen has no wings she will most likely be fertile. If you're keeping her in a test tube setup and she's tugging at the cotton that can indicate she's infertile. If you leave queens alone in a dark place away from vibrations for about a week they usually lay eggs. Try that if you have not yet. If she ends up being infertile, just remember it is currently nuptial flight season and you can always catch more!
