So I got some flightless/wingless fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster). drtrmiller recommended to print up his Fruitfly Culture Tube (http://www.thingiver...om/thing:409294), but I like to call it a fruit fly shaker. As it is just like a spice or salt shaker.

I am printing at least 3 of these, so I can cycle them and always have fresh flies to shake out. It seems to be a really good, thought out design.

So anyway some pictures:

The completed shaker:

The top piece that has the slider, to open and shut the shaker:

The base:

The middle with climbing fins. The top of it:

The bottom of it, slightly burnt. As the print left some strings of filament, easiest way to clear them out was to use a BBQ lighter:

The whole album can be found here: Fruitfly shaker

Yeah, how weird. My IE does show them, but my Firefox says they contain errors. I've never seen this happen before.

I think the real question here is why are you guys using IE to begin with. Caveman status right there.

EDIT:

How do you get out just a few without them all flying away? O:

i have printed out one of these as well, and was extremely extremely lucky with keeping my culture alive. i printed mine out about 2-3 weeks ago and only had 2 flies survive for a new culture (there was almost no hope, but hey why not try right?). well, i opened it up today and had many many flies jumping out at me! i will upload a few pictures later in the day with an edit to this post. my initial review though is that it works extremely well, no escapees and is easily disassembled for cleaning (only 3 main parts as i count the two lid pieces as one).

My first try involved a 3D-printed one that was left outside when it was still cool, last spring.

After some weeks, I had a number of fruit flies, although they were the flying variety.

The design can use some improvement, I'm sure.  I simply haven't had time, given all the ant projects I'm working on.

Keep us posted and good luck :~)

i honestly think the design works being as simple as it is. i have fruit flies now, and i have only had them escape when i turn the top to let them out. otherwise i think the design works wonderfully.

also i'll be printing a second to use in rotation (one cleaning and the other culturing).

I think it would be cool if it featured a segment you could open into another segment and then close to move those without opening the whole thing.

Yessir. And that particular chamber is removable so I can throw it in a freezer to stun them without having to freeze the whole thing.
