I'm looking to buy a beginning colony of camponotus in case I don't catch any fertile queens this season and also a smaller colony of Formica ants. I believe they're the next largest species of ants in Michigan? I'm new to ant keeping, since I'm not counting the sad little ant farms from when I was a kid.

Sorry, I don't think anyone will have any queens or colonies for sale at this time of year as Camponotus and Formica won't be flying until summer. That is around May to July for most Camponotus and late June to September for Formica. Additionally for Camponotus it takes around 3 months to raise the first batch of workers and around 2-3 months for Formica. Your only chance of obtaining a small starting colony now is from flights last year.

Formica range from 5mm to a little over 10mm

C. pennsylvanicus is the largest ant in the region with majors measuring around 17mm I think. Most other Camponotus besides Myrmentoma should also have majors roughly around 15mm, give or take. Flights of C. pennsylvanicus are hard to miss.

Thank you, I was looking for someone who maybe caught too many queens last year, just so I could have some ants to enjoy if I don't find any. I do have helpers with better eyes than myself, but we're all newbies when it comes to ants. I have not found any local groups, which I find weird. We have groups for everything under the sun but ants!
