I'd love to swing by and take a look at it first hand. I always imagined the Nucleus was a better bet because of it's removable glass. Either way, a nest that big I imagine its going to take some time before you get a colony big enough to fit it. I hope you have other options for the stages in between.

 

If you catch imparis queens next year, I will buy few colonies off you and, when I do, I will bring one over to show you. :P

Yeah Mercutia- that is why I ordered a custom large one - this has removable glass with a large area up top too :)

Slightly off topic, sorry. 

 

I'm interested in getting 2 formicaria from Tarheel for my Dorymyrmex colonies. Would they be considered medium or small ants?

I believe medium ant size is 6mm to 10mm. (Worker size, not queen size)

 

Anything smaller than that should be considered small, but if your species is hovering around 5mm  mark, I'd go with medium to be safe.

Awesome thanks. I believe D. Bicolor hover around 4-5mm maximum so I'll just go with medium.

DesertAntz, I have a one year old Dorymyrmex insanus colony in a custom Piece of Haven formicarium from Tar Heel Ants with a removable face. I chose the small size tunnels and my D. insanus seem to fit well. If you think you may reuse the formicarium for larger species in the future, you should definitely go with a medium nest.

I've already ordered them with medium sized tunnels. I'm sure I could email him to change it, but I'll stick with the medium as a contingency plan in case something were to happen to my colonies and I want to use them for a slightly bigger species. Thanks for your input.

I ordered the Nucleus today. I will probably get it next year in mid Jan or early Feb. I will review it once I get it.

Ants I have: Tapinoma sessile(2 queen colony). RED MORPH Camponotus neacticus(now has pupae!), Tetramorium immigrans (x3), Aphaenogaster sp, Temnothorax sp, Brachymyrmex sp.   possibly infertile   :(,  Ponera pennsylvanica, and Pheidole morrisi!  :yahoo: 

 

Other insects: Polistes sp. Queen

                    

Ants I need: Pheidole sp., Trachymyrmex sp., Crematogaster cerasi , Dorymyrmex sp. Most wanted: Pheidole morrisii
