1. Location of collection:
Within 1/8th of a mile of Baldy Ln, Hesperia, CA 92345
2. Date of collection:
2-26-17
3. Habitat of collection:
This queen was located in a wash found in a desert scrub land.
4. Length (from head to gaster):
9.5mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture:
The color is black. it is rather shiny. it is hairy.
6. Distinguishing characteristics:
one petiole bump, 11 antennal segments.
7. Distinguishing behavior:
They are rather docile and slow. I was surprised when I dug a founding chamber and two queens came up at once. This happened twice during this trip. I think this species might live together sometimes.
8. Nest description:
The nests were located in the bottom of the wash where the water had recently run through. I was informed by a friend some ants had flown the week before. The founding mounds were very small, perhaps only 4 centimeters across and round in shape. The queens were roughly 25cm below the earth, in a very wet gritty sand.
