Thanks to soulsynapse's guidance in where exactly I should go to, I went to:

21780 Pamo Rd. in Cleveland National Forest in California: Orosco Ridge Trail.

A little past that address, there was a hiking trail to the left and with a small side parking lot with dirt surface. I parked there, and went down to where the trail splits into two trails. I took the left one, and it went uphill to a nice view of more mountains. On that small hill at the top, I saw a few holes with dirt around it. I shoveled about 6 inches down and found a myrmecocystus queen in each. Some of the holes were a hit and some were a miss. At the end of the night, I got 4 queens. Here are some pictures of the entrance to the trail and an overall view of Cleveland National Forest in case you decide to go there. The place was quite, saw very very few people on the Sunday I went, maybe 5-7 people in 10 hrs. I hope this helps.

That looks very green

They really do! I saw red, black and yellow ants, but I'd say there were more of the red ones dominating the area.

Nice pictures! Makes me jealous of all the warm weather y'all get in California. Here in Massachusetts we are getting ready for another blizzard, haha.

Yeah, I am seeing a lot of snowstorms in the East side on news the past few months. The only bad thing here is that there is a fault line for earthquakes. I hope you get to travel to California sometime :) Supposedly the socal climate is called Mediterranean weather, and there are only two in the world.

Yeah. Let me take a picture of one of them. I am pretty sure the other 3 are the same. I'll try my best with getting clear images.

Yeah those honeypot ants are Myrmecocystus testaceus. They fly in the evening just before it gets dark.

You Socal-ians are bathing yourself in ants...

While us New Englanders sit around in the snow... no ant to be seen.

:(
