I was told it was definitely Myrmecocystus but I wanted to see if you guys could tell the subspecies. Many thanks in advance!
Subscribed! Hope you get your answer
Myrmecocystus, probably M. testaceus. The other possibility is M. wheeleri. Actually the more I look at it the more I am leaning towards M. wheeleri. The appropriate term is species not subspecies.

OK, many thanks on both accounts!

What about M. mimicus? I found a bunch of M. mimicus with these exact strange colors (compared to the workers they produced). The queen and workers both keyed out to M. mimicus.
Workers came out black with dark red heads.
I'm going with M mimicus
Just a W.A.G.?

Well anything is possible with this silly genus. I guess we won't know until we see some workers.
