Location: Eastern NC, next to a small creek.
Date: October 2, 2016
Habitat: Small four wheeler path of dirt next to a small creek.
Length: Around 3/8 of an inch.
Color, pattern, texture: Light brown, very dark brown gaster that is almost black.
Distguinshing Behavior: Very slow movement, declined several attempts to transfer her into a test tube.
Nest description: Queen was caught while searching or foraging.

Can you provide a clear picture of the head? This might be Pheidole as the 2 nodes on the petiole indicates but I don't think we've ruled out other species like Solenopsis invicta.

It does actually look like it could be Solenopsis invicta to me also. Pheidole usually looks different from above
