1. Location of collection: Suburban neighborhood
2. Date of collection: 9/28/2016
3. Habitat of collection: Carpet? Very hot weather recently
4. Length (from head to gaster): 18mm or 0.70 inches
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Browner underbody and legs. Half brown and half black Gaster
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Very tall Petiole and small Postpetiole. Large thorax
7. Distinguishing behavior: Very calm behavior, not running around looking for escape nor sitting and cleaning itself.
8. Nest description: Unknown

I believe it's a queen because of its size and thorax.

The test tube is roughly 17mm in diameter, I think I should put it in my other 30mm diameter tube.
Also I'm new to this and have already designed and 3D printed formicarium but for some reason, all my queens in test tubes keep dying.

Typically on the 3rd - 5th day they'll curl up and be unresponsive. I leave them in a dark box in a room that's about 75-80 degrees.

It's becoming a bit depressing to be honest

I for some reason cannot upload pictures maybe it's because I'm new to the forum so here's an album on imgur of the ant.

Looks like Camponotus to me.

Are you using a cotton ball filled with water?

Also looks very similar to the C. vicinus I caught this year. They have a good range of color variations is difficult to identify without other features or workers. Mind if I ask what area of Los Angeles?

Camponotus vicinus, Crematogaster 1, Crematogaster 2, Formica francoeuri, *, *, Myrmecocystus testaceus, Novomessor cockerelli, Pheidole hyatti, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus, Solenopsis invicta
