Found these little nocturnal guys in Rio Rancho, New Mexico in some brushland. I believe its a type of Myrmecocystus but not sure if Mexicanus or Navajo which we both get out here. I am new, so maybe it is neither!

I think its more likely Navajo because the color and eyes are higher... I am hoping for a queen in the Spring nuptial flight.

That looks more like M. navajo to me as well, but size will confirm it.

Pogonomyrmex rugosus

Manica bradleyi

I'd vote M. navajo. Looks a little bit lighter in color and you mentioned them being nocturnal. I think M. navajo are known to be nocturnal.

I am leaning more towards M. mexicanus but the images are nowhere near detailed enough to  be sure. Just going with Myrmecocystus sp. is the way to go.
