Location:  Black Star Canyon, Orange County, California.
Habitat:  Sagebrush foothills, along side a dirt road.
Coloration, hue and pattern:  Very dark maroon or sometimes black head, very dark maroon thorax, black gaster.
Length:  6mm - 7.5mm.
Distinguishing characteristics:  Large spines. Covered in sparse erect hair. Polymorphic. Very aggressive.
These ants were foraging in the day time and the night time after dark.
