Location:  Black Star Canyon, Cleveland National Forest, Orange County, California.
Habitat:  Oak forest, on a dirt road.
Coloration, hue and pattern:  Black head, red thorax, shiny black abdomen.
Distinguishing characteristics:  Covered in spiky hairs.
Length:  9mm.
