So I finally bought a microscope.  (y)  I got the AmScope 3.5X-90X Boom Stand Binocular Zoom Stereo Microscope on Boom + 80 LED Light, as seen here (http://www.amazon.co...e/dp/B006QN5T5G).

Now maybe I can start keying out some of my ants myself. :)

Plate of steel, steel tube, threaded stud, cylindrical magnet, ball bearing (a little larger than the tube), cork, five thin round adhesive pads/feet (one used as the base of the cork), super glue, and spray paint.

 

Knowing the materials, the picture should pretty much give the how.

Male Camponotus, I'd say. You'll be able to see a lot with this scope. No need to upgrade until you get that keying experience and decide you're ready for Solenopsis.  :dash:

If I remember right, I think a lot of the genus is very hard to ID.
