Carpenter ants and harvester ants are in your area but harvesters grow way faster than carpenters but they are some of the med sized in your area.

For smaller species and fast growers you have Pheidole /big headed ants.

Are these other species good for begginners?

To catch them I would go to parks for carpenters and deserts for harvesters. Then I would shine a black light and catch queens.
Hope this helps!

Yes they are most starters first choice. But be aware that some harvester ants sting, mainly pogonomyrmex not veromessor. And carpenters don't sting but once they get majors the bites will hurt a little.

Do you think that with a black light could catch some queens in an area that sprays?

There is a slim chance. If there is pesdisides in the parks I would go to a forest.

You could also place a tarp under the blacklight, to lower the risk.
