So my mom ordered a Tetramorium Immigrans colony for me from Buckeye Myrmycology. Which nest should I use acrylic, wood, plaster, grout, naturalistic, or tubs and tubes.

They will live in a tubs and tubes setup till at least the fifty worker point.

I have had a lot of experience with Tetramorium and I’m going to say in my experience with these they always die in plaster. I tried different moisture levels but it never worked. Acrylic works the best for me. 


Is it just me that likes the look of ant brood? It just reminds of you how well an ant colony is doing.

I'm currently doing a tub and tubes setup for mine until they reach a mature size, just so I don't need to buy a new nest every other week.

Tubs and tubes will be the easiest and cheapest since you can just add more tubes when they need more space, although it isn't the greatest for visibility and fastest growth.

I would think acrylic would suit them the best all around, and it likely has the best visibility and is the easiest to heat.

The very best setup for Tetramorium is a simple tub and tube setup. Buy a good escape proof box and line the bottom with a very thin layer of dry sand. Make sure your tube is covered to keep it dark and make only a tiny entrance hole to the tube using a straw or drilling a small hole in the cap of the tube. Keep the box at least 80 degrees.

So I know how to make a tubs and tubes setup. But where should I get acrylic nests from for when the colony is to hard to contain in a tubs and tubes setup

An AC hybrid nest would work well with some modifications like adding substrate or gypsum plaster and sealing the glass with silicone.

Can I use hot glue to stick it or do I need silicone. If so does normal silicone work or do I need aquarium safe silicone.

They will chew through hot glue eventually. Any 100% silicone will work. Loctite clear silicone is a cheap brand I buy at Home Depot. Aquarium silicone is exactly the same, but twice the price.

I have a 1000+ worker Tetramorium Colony and they are housed in a small AC hybrid nest with a small outworld. They never get through the glass.
