1. Close to (not in) Cleveland national forest in southern California
2. April 1st 2023
3. Forested area with lots of rotting logs and rocks. Picture of environment below.
4. Workers are slightly different sizes (4-5 mm) queen is 7.5 mm
5. Workers have a slight red thorax and head while the gaster is black. Shiny silver hairs all over the body. Relatively large eyes. Queen is similar to workers although she has a more vibrant thorax and darker head.
6. Relatively long antennae.
7. They sometimes have fast erratic movements similar to some Myrmecocystus.
8. Under a rock. Didn't notice any tunnels or anything even after reviewing the footage.

I know this is a formica species of some sort, this post is just to narrow it down.

Formica fusca-group species. Without better pictures, getting to species will be no more than a roll-of-the-dice.

i have seen very similar ants by where i live in cali. I'm pretty sure they are the same. i have not identified them but i have been studying them for about 2 or 3 years now. i keep trying to get a queen but no luck. the colony I've been watching is in rohr park. your description sounds like we found the same species. i also posted about them a bit ob reddit and they all just said formica fusca group... so... real helpful.
