Hello I just caught these two queens up in the Ortegas In lake Elsinore CA just across the street from the candy shop on Wednesday March 23rd 2022 at around 10:10-10:30pm, 64°F, and little to no wind. I've loved ants and learned about them for years now so I'm excited to finally put my knowledge to the test!!! These are my first ants I'm keeping and plan to do everything in my power to make them both have full Colonys one day. This journal will have updates for each stage in development, and just notable things. I am new and might make some mistakes, if so just lmk and I'll fix them right away!

Got them both setup in a test tube!
I found the Vicinus poking her head out of a new hole she just dug because I was a bit too late for them flying.(10:30 and it was cold) I turned away so the light wasn't on her and she peaked out a bit so I scooped her up quick lol
As for the Anthrax she was just walking around on the path without a care in the world. She's been very stiff since I got her. Luckily in the test tube she started to calm down and drink some water and now she's doing okay.
They're both in a shoe box wrapped in a towel for insolation and I plan on getting a heat wire it's just shipping now.

I think antscihub.com would be a good place to start off for info on raising these species. It just so happens that the website has caresheets for both vicinus AND maritimus, so you're in luck! I'll post the links here if you wanna check them out:

(UPDATE 3/26) I'm going to be adding three different Camponotus queens to this Journal. All were collected from the same location just two days from when I collected the other queens.

The first queen I'm adding is a CA02 queen.... She took me about 15-20 minutes to actually get into the test tube. I have a feeling I'm going to have a lot of fun taking car of this one lol.

The second queen is a Cola queen? I'm not sure much about them but she looks awesome, sadly missing an antenna but I'm sure she'll do fine. Seems a bit stiff rn but other than that nothing notable.

The final queen I'm adding is a Clarithorax. She's been the easiest of all of them, walked right into the test tube started drinking water and hasn't really gotten stressed. (Or at least hasn't been showing signs of stress)

Next update will probably be 4 weeks from now I plan on leaving them alone till than.

That one you said is C. maritimus is actually C. anthrax. They have nests all over that trail there. When they have a big flight, the queens are all over the trail.

By cola do you mean Camponotus quercicola? Because C. quercicola is no longer a valid name, it's now C. laevigatus.

(UPDATE Apr 27) All of the queens have laid eggs except for one (anthrax) I haven't used a heating cable yet. I might introduce one soon. Super excited to see everyone else has a healthy amount of eggs though 😍 I'll keep a close eye out for when the nanitics arrive and updated ASAP.
